Gingivitis or inflammation of the gums, is most often caused by inadequate oral hygiene. Gingivitis is the mildest form of periodontal disease and is reversible with good home care in combination with professional cleanings. At this stage, the gums appear to be red, swollen, and bleed easily. Many health factors can also causes gingivitis, such as pregnancy, inadequate nutrition, certain medications, some medical conditions, and stress.
Periodontitis can be caused when gingivitis is left untreated. When plaque is not properly removed from the teeth, it can move below the gum line and cause infection. This infection can begin to affect the surrounding structures of the teeth, causing destruction of the bone and ligaments that attach the gums to the teeth. Gums will begin to pull away from the teeth, creating deep pockets, and the teeth become loose and eventually need to be removed. In many cases, periodontitis has mild symptoms which is why it’s very important to see your dentist and dental hygienist regularly so the disease process can be prevented or stopped early in its progression.
